Job Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) shall function as an integral member of the Pediatric Section of Orthopaedic Surgery, acting under the direct responsibility and supervision of the chief of the service to which he/she is assigned. The PA will confer and seek advice from the supervising physician as indicated by the patient?s condition or as determined by the supervising physician. The clinical role of the Physician Assistant is to provide specific designated actions delegated by the attending physician and performed under the direction and control of the attending physician. His/her clinical role will be most direct in the orthopaedic inpatient units and clinics, the operating room and in emergencies.
CLINICAL:
Clinical supervision of the PA shall be continuous but will not require the physical presence of the supervising physicians. The PA will meet with his/her supervising physician on a regular basis to review his/her performance and to identify areas where improvement is needed. The overall responsibility for patient care rests with the supervising physician, with the PA acting on the behalf of and under the authority of the supervising physician.
Responsibilities*
Specific tasks which may be performed by the PA as assigned by his/her supervising physician may include:
- Performance and recording of admission and preoperative work-ups.
- Work efficiently in the operating room., outpatient clinic and on the inpatient service.
- Assisting in the Emergency Department with evaluation of acute injuries.
- Performance of non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as assigned by the supervising physician, including:
- Provision of appropriate wound care including removal of sutures.
- Familiarity with Stealth CT and oversight for preoperative planning of spinal fusions
Application and removal of casts to body and extremities;
Patient cast management and education;
- Pre- and post-operative orders including diet, activities, laboratory and X-ray studies, special treatments (e.g., physical therapy) and nursing instructions may be written and signed by the PA as the delegate of his/her supervising physician;
- Orders for oral or parenteral medications and fluids in their usual customary doses may be written and signed by the PA as the delegate of his/her supervising physician and in compliance with treatment protocols or as prescribed by the patient?s treating physician;
- The PA may transcribe verbal orders from his/her supervising physician or his/her delegate;
- In all cases, any order written by a PA will be countersigned by the supervising physician or his delegate within 24 hours;
- In any case in which a nurse may question an order written by the PA, he/she should feel free to consult with his/her supervising physician before carrying out the order;
- The PA may write and sign prescriptions according to protocols or as prescribed by his/her supervising physician;
- The PA will make patient rounds with the surgical team if necessary.
- The PA will be available as assigned for a 40-hour work week. This is a salaried position.
- The PA will participate in inpatient and outpatient consultations.
INVESTIGATIONAL
- The PA will actively participate in the research projects of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery;
- He/she will be allowed to initiate and conduct research of his/her own under the guidance of the faculty of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery and in conformity with all University regulations.
EDUCATIONAL
- The PA shall participate in the instructional activities of nurses, technicians, other hospital personnel, medical students, junior house officers and other trainees or visitors who are included in the activities of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery;
- The PA will be expected to continue his/her education by informal discussions, frequent and regular meetings with his/her supervising physicians, outside reading, and attendance at appropriate conferences and meetings;
- The PA must meet certain requirements for continuing medical education, periodic recertifying examinations and peer review in order to maintain his/her national certification. He/she will be allowed an appropriate amount of time for these activities and will be reimbursed for expenses incurred for formal continuing medical education.
EVALUATION
Formal evaluations and reprivileging will be done at least every other year at the time of the Medical Staff reappointments for the Department of Surgery.
Required Qualifications*
Michigan Physician's Assistant License Current Nat'l Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) NCCPA Specialty Certification, if applicable Two Letters of Reference, to include competency statements and Scope of Services.
Desired Qualifications*
Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the American Medical Association is necessary. Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants is desirable. Satisfactory completion of the examination administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners is desirable. Fellowship in the American Academy of Physician Assistants and memberships in the State chapter of the Michigan Academy of Physician Assistants is desirable.
Additional Information
Departmental Qualifications:
Experience with surgery patient care required; orthopaedic surgery preferred. Ability to evaluate and care for preoperative and postoperative orthopaedic surgery patients. Ability to work with supervision and as part of a collaborative team on the Pediatric Orthopaedic Service and with other orthopaedic mid-level providers. Excellent interpersonal and patient service skills. Some flexibility in work schedule is necessary.
