REGISTERED NURSE Per Diem (University Hospital-Anesthesia, Adult Acute Pain Service)

Job Summary

This job opening is for a Per Diem RN position within the Anesthesia, Acute Pain Service. * Please note that these positions do not qualify for UMHS benefits and specific terms and conditions of employment are negotiated at the department level.

Responsibilities*

Completes daily rounds with the Multidisciplinary Pain Service Team members.
Participate in the identification and treatment management of patients with complex pain problems. Treatment modalities include PCAs, Epidurals, Brachial Plexus and non-pharmacologic therapies. Utilize the Nursing Process to assess the patients comfort level. Provide expert care of the patient in pain across the continuum of care in a collaborative manner to promote continuity of care. Treat inadequate analgesia and complications associated with the pain utilizing protocol and standard orders. Reevaluate patients' responses and progress with treatment and interventions. Consult with Anesthesiologist regarding any required changes in the pain management modalities. Provide pre-op teaching for post-op pain control. Document patient assessments, plans, and evaluation of care. Provide direct patient assessments, plans, and evaluation of care. Work collaboratively with other health team members to provide continuity of patient and family care. Provide support to patients/families through utilization of both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques appropriate for age and physical condition. Recognize potential risk management issues and takes appropriate actions. Acts as a resource for Primary Service and bedside practitioners' questions concerning the APS. Provide pertinent pain information to patients/families utilizing various approaches and resources available within the hospital to meet educational needs. Serve as a resource for nursing staff by sharing skills and knowledge related to clinical areas. Serve as a resource and role model for nursing staff by implementing a variety of approaches and resources available in the hospital to meet education needs.. Participate in collection of patient data to support consults and initiation of pain therapies. Participate in continuous quality improvement by involvement in teams as appropriate and by supporting changes recommended through the continuous quality improvement process.

Required Qualifications*

Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan required.
Three or more years of nursing experience as a RN is required.
Recent (within the last two years) surgical nursing experience with the focus on management of post-operative pain required.
Demonstrated expertise with PCA, epidurals and other pain management modalities required. Knowledge of pain physiology required.
Demonstrated and documented excellent communication and collaboration skills required. Charge nurse experience or equivalent leadership and management skills required.

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is desirable.
Critical Care experience is desirable.
Knowledge of the University Hospitals nursing policies and practice is desirable.
Demonstrated ability to function independently and as a team member.
Demonstrated competence with computer functions including E-mail, Care Web, GroupWise, and Centricity is desired.

Work Schedule

Hours per week: 20hrs/week
Rotation of Night and Evening shifts
Wage: Hourly wage starts at $ 35.00 per hour for RN's with more than one (1) year of full time RN experience.
Evening Shift Differential is $1.00 per hour
Night Shift Differential is $ 1.25 per hour

Additional Information

Per Diem Nurse Guidelines:

Scheduling:
1. Each Per Diem employee working three or more shifts per scheduling period will be scheduled to work a minimum of two weekend shifts per scheduling period (8 hours = 1 shift).
Per Diem nurses who preschedule two or fewer shifts per scheduling period do not have to meet the weekend requirements. They may add additional UNANTICIPATED SHIFTS ONLY.
2. Each Per Diem nurse will be expected to work a portion of scheduled shifts on off shifts (recommended guide: 25%).
3. Managers may establish additional guidelines based upon individual unit scheduling requirements. Therefore, it is recommended that managers and temporary nurses meet to discuss specific unit expectations.
4. Each Per Diem nurse will be scheduled to work the number of shifts during holiday weeks that reflects his/her normal scheduling pattern. Per Diem nurses should be scheduled to work shifts during three out of the six holiday weeks and one of these weeks should be Christmas or New Year's week. (A week is defined as Sunday through Saturday during which the holiday falls).
5. Per Diem Nurses are to be scheduled after all regular staff are scheduled per contract language, and may be called scheduled or called off from a pre-established schedule depending on the unit needs.
6. The Per Diem nurse who does not work for a period of one (1) year will be terminated from the Medical Center.

1. Per Diem nurses have an obligation to pay monthly dues.
2. Per Diem nurses will have access to regular employment opportunities over applicants from outside the hospital.
3. Per Diem nurses may use dispute and arbitration procedures with respect to alleged violations specifically applying to Per Diem employees. Issues eligble for the dispute and arbitration process include staffing and scheduling, discipline without just cause, pay issues, and discharge without just cause.
