Associate University Librarian for Library Information Technology
The University of Michigan Library seeks a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented leader for the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Library Information Technology (LIT). The position reports to the Dean of Libraries and is part of the library's leadership team. The AUL for LIT will lead the development of information technology in support of the university's current and emerging research needs, and the advancement of scholarly literacy and instructional technologies. We are searching for a professional who views the library as an integral part of a world-class research university, and who has a deep understanding of the myriad and changing roles of the library on campus.
Since 1995, the U-M Library's LIT division has driven initiatives and projects that have changed the global library landscape, beginning with the seminal Making of America digitization collaborative, and continuing with the Google digitization project and most recently the launch and ongoing evolution of HathiTrust. The AUL for LIT will lead 60 talented staff members in six units: Core Services, Digital Library Production Services, Learning Technology Incubation Group, Library Systems, User Experience, and Web Systems. Together these units are charged with the design, development, management, and maintenance of a flexible and reliable technology environment, specifically: the development and management of digital collections and access tools; the development of a fully accessible, feature and content rich library web presence that applies user experience principles and strategies; the development and support of server-based technologies for the delivery of library services; the maintenance of library management systems; and the delivery of frameworks and systems to support collaborative storage, delivery, and preservation of information resources.
LIT units interact with all areas of the library to collaborate, innovate, and maintain library-specific services and systems integral to collections, research, teaching, publishing, and a variety of outreach programs and initiatives. Thus the AUL for LIT must be dedicated to public service, and prepared to engage with all of the library's activities to fully understand the entire range of information technologies needs. The AUL for LIT must also possess the technical and conceptual knowledge to represent the library in broad conversations about IT, and advance the campus-wide development of emerging instructional technologies as well as systems to enable emerging research needs, including the management and preservation of data.
* Master's degree in Computer Science, Library and Information Science, or Management of Information Systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
* Thorough understanding of the changing nature of the academic technology environment;
* Familiarity with relevant industry standards and methodologies;
* Appreciation for the importance of diversity in the workplace and the ability to flourish in a culture that values diversity of thought and backgrounds;
* Record of successful budget management;
* Proven leadership in the profession.
* Significant demonstrated successful managerial and administrative experience in a large research library or in a related academic or research setting, with an emphasis on digital library issues;
* Knowledge and understanding of research library organizations and the interrelationships of divisions;
* Thorough understanding of current issues and trends facing research libraries, including the impact of digital collections and archival/preservation needs;
* Grant management experience.

Benefits, Rank, and Salary
Final rank and salary dependent on experience and qualifications. Professional positions receive 24 days of vacation a year; 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits as well as opportunities for professional development and travel. Retirement savings options include TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments.
